Righto, ladies and gents. I've heard from pretty much every carnivore advocate on net that red meat ruminents are the way to go for the bulk of your calories and protein, and as far as I can see, the logic makes sense. So when I started a couple of months ago, those were the foods I gravitated towards. What I've found, though, is that I can't seem to eat enough of them before my body just refuses to eat anymore. If I was trying to lose weight, that might be a good thing, however, I'm coming from the other way. I was underweight when I started (due to plants making me sick) and while I'm loving the way I'm feeling, I can't maintain the calorie intake on red meat alone. I've found that contrary to pretty much all carnivore advice, I'm naturally gravitating towards chicken, eggs, bacon and dairy. Mind you, I don't mean milk and cheese. I'm talking about thickened cream and ghee for fat. I crave these foods and can eat more than enough for my energy requirements. I feel good eating them and they're cheap enough that I can afford the very best quality.I'm really enjoying finally being able to fill my belly without feeling terrible for the rest of the day, and finally having the energy to work out hard and build some muscle. So my questions for you guys are;
Has anyone else found that they feel better on, and enjoy the non ruminant meats/animal products MORE than the red meats?Is this just a phase that I'll pass though eventually?
I'm aware that there is a certain adaptation period to begin with. Perhaps with more time I'll grow to want the red stuff more. For now though, Chickens, pigs and milk fat seem to be where it's at.

If that's what you are hungry for, it's fine.
btw, the dairy is ofc a source of ruminant fat :) and the pork is red meat :)
From what we know of the range of carnivore experience, it's having some sources of mammalian fat that is key -- eg bear, seal, or whale to go with fish. Beef, lamb, or pork fat along with fowl. Dairy fat, butter or ghee can be a foundational source of supplemental fat

yes, afaik, but OP is still eating red meat, the bacon, and if they are missing anything they'll get cravings for other animal source foods -- might be for fish, seafood or other red meat.

That's more or less how I figured it will work.
I figure my body knows what it needs and will send cravings to balance things out if and when it's necessary.
I think the bulk of the micronutrients are covered by pastured eggs anyway.
I do still eat beef. It's just not the main calorie source. I quite like drying it out in the fridge until it's jerky. tastes awesome with runny egg yolk.

The concern about chicken (and pork) is the unnaturally high levels of omega 6 linoleic acid content of their fat, caused by feeding them garbage. Ruminants, even grain fed, have much lower levels of linoleic acid. Extreme levels of omega 6 content is of course the main concern with industrial seed oils.

Does it matter what fats you eat animal or plant? If your body is on ketosis it should be fine.

yes it matters, eg soybean oil induces nausea at the high levels required for ketosis. actually just the thought of it does.
a ketogenic diet with vegetable/industrial oils has a special term it's called "a poorly formulated one", leads to problens even if the nausea is surpassed.
btw, this is a subreddit about eating animal source foods only.

I also lose too much weight if I only have beef. I need dairy and bacon. My favourite dairy is mascarpone.

German/Ukrainian ancestry here, and I'm right there with you guys. I suspect it does have a lot to do with ancestry! Tbh I could eat ghee by the spoonful straight out of the jar. Mmmmm. Also, real cream cheese was an exciting find (in the organic section of my grocery store - nothing but milk, cream, and bacterial culture on the label rather than the garbage full of fillers in the regular dairy section). Seriously, that and 18% sour cream I can add to literally anything. Love it.

Random but I am carnivorish with Celtic/German heritage and the food that finally broke my sugar addiction was butter. Copious amounts of butter. Ghee as well.

My ancestry is mainly Dutch followed by German, French and North Indian. I LOVE dairy and it has never had any negative effects on me.

Eat high fat cuts like a ribeye and eat all the gristle, fat and cartilage. Add butter to your plate, but your hot steak over it and let it melt. Eat all that butter with your steak. You are not eating enough fat.

You need to eat more fat. An example would be beef fat trimmings.
This happens often, that people eat too much protein/meat and they need to add more fat.

Nope. The more beef fat I eat, the faster I feel satiated and can't eat any more. If I try to force it, I feel sick. The only way for me is to basically drink it as cream, which I have been doing. Even if I get all my fat calories from cream, I can't even eat enough lean beef for my protein requirements before I start feeling sick.
This isn't a macro problem. It's a "I can't stomach that much beef" problem.
I've done the math and added fat to ground beef for ratio. I've tried eating only fatty ribeyes. I've tried adding ghee to steaks.. None of it works because my stomach won't let me eat it. It makes me feel sick if I try to force it.

I'm not a girl, and I DO like red meat. It's just a quantity thing. I can only eat about 300g at a time before it starts to get hard. On the flip side, I can easily eat a whole chicken and a bowl of scrambled eggs with ghee and half a bottle of cream without breaking a sweat. I actually have to be careful not to eat too much actually. I guess I'm just a weirdo.
I know what you mean though. It's more common in women from what I've seen too.

Yeah it does unfortunately. I still buy them and eat them occasionally. Any more than two or three times a week and they start to become tedious, though, and I really don't want to ruin them for myself. They taste fantastic when I start and by the time I'm finished I'm pretty much done with red meat for a couple of days. About 300g seems to be the limit. Any more and it's a real struggle.

I’d still include some red meat for the nutritional benefits but if you’re feeling good go for it. My appetite changes all the time. There’s weeks where I eat so many chicken wings and chicken thighs you wouldn’t believe it. Other weeks I load up on Salmon and shellfish. Most weeks it’s ribeyes.

BTW there's nothing wrong with drinking milk or eating cheese if you don't react to them. those products are also a great way to keep weight up.

Once you clear your taste of carb addictions, let that be your guide
Try eating chicken or beef with no salt or other seasonings on it
And see what you like better

It could be a seasoning issue. Or a temperature issue (rare | med rare | med | med well | well). Or a thickness issue. Or an issue finding a cut that you enjoy.
Or maybe u just don’t like it. Who knows. Do Whatever works for u.

Chicken is a no go. Way to much linoleic acid. Same for bacon. To me it sounds like you weren’t fat adapted yet when you decided to move away from red meat. Try eating just beef, salt, and water for a week and get back to us. Don’t count calories, just when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.

So I'm still getting into the diet myself but from my research chicken is still fine (prefer the dark meat over the lighter meat if you can for more nutrients / fat) BUT the issue with chicken or pork as main (potentially) is an unfavorable omega 6:3 ratio. so more inflammatory than beef which is perfect there. grass fed better of course. I would say as long as you're feeling good especially mentally and energy-wise then press on I've heard people eat just wings for a while etc. But if you're experiencing more pain or other markers of inflammation maybe add in some better omega ratio meats.
Even though ratios are off the people that talk about chicken (when they aren't just eating chicken breast) seem to do well with it so YMMV listen to your body and adapt. I think you're on right track. Just need food you enjoy and make you feel good
